Thyroid disease is a concern...

Babies with Down syndrome are 13-54% more likely to have thyroid disease, more specifically hypothyroidism. Basically, hypothyroidism is low thyroid production.

What is a thyroid?
It’s a small gland located in your neck.

What is hypothyroidism and why do I need to worry about it?
The thyroid gland’s job is to produce and regulate thyroid hormone. This hormone tells the body how to use and process sugar, fat, and vitamins. Hypothyroidism means the gland slows down or stops secreting thyroid hormone.

Why is this a problem?
Left untreated, hypothyroidism can lead to potentially serious symptoms, such as:

  • Developmental delays-physical and mental
  • Low energy level
  • Constipation
  • Thickening of skin
  • Sleepiness
  • Other serious complications

The symptoms often don’t show up until damage is already done. Children with Down syndrome need to be screened yearly. Be sure and mention this to your child’s pediatrician if they don’t bring it up.

Unfortunately the only way they can screen for this disease is with a blood draw. No matter how painful that appointment might be, do it anyway. It’s that important.

What can I do about it?
Good news! Hypothyroidism can be controlled with medication.
