An ear infection is very painful!

Do you remember having an ear infection when you were young? I do. It was extremely painful!

Kids with Down syndrome have a higher risk of becoming infected because of their small ear canal structure. When cold and flu season comes around, so does ear problems.

How can I tell if my child has this?

Sometimes your baby will cry and fuss for what seems like no reason. A fever may be present. They might pull or tug at their ear. There could be some drainage from the ear if the eardrum has burst.

Sometimes fluid will build up in the middle ear without causing an infection. This causes hearing loss and your child should be examined to see if they need ear tubes.

Treatment

Sometimes the nasty little infection causing all the pain to your baby goes away on its own. (I hate anything that gives my child trouble!) You can give acetaminophen for the pain and use a hot washcloth like a heating pad on the ear. If the infection is bacterial then antibiotics are given. Find out from your doctor what is best for your child’s situation.
